At first, we were a duo...

Don Mares and Paul Wigton began playing music together when they attended Regis Jesuit High, back in the early 70s. Don and Paul were both fans of John Denver's music; being a fan of John's music in the early 70s while of high school age was *not* the coolest thing to be! Don taught Paul to play guitar and many an enjoyable homeroom period was spent by the old elevator at Regis High, singing John Denver songs.

As a result, Don and Paul began what became a lifelong friendship and musical partnering. Don's wonderfully lithe, light work on his vintage Gibson 'Dove' is a sight and sound to behold; Paul's specialty has always been his high, sailing vocals, and to the group he adds the beautiful symphony of his Guild 412XL 12-string, an instrument that simply *has* to be heard to be believed. Don's lithe and fluid fingerwork on guitar is part of the foundation and soul of the group's sound.

A hiatus during the 1980s and 1990s, extending into the early 2000s, which only saw Don and Paul getting together once or twice a year, came to an end in 2005, when Paul emerged, mainly intact, from a divorce. Music was a driving force towards that recovery and with Don's unerringly faithful friendship, coupled with the deep and abiding love of a wonderful new lady in Paul's life (Renee', who, as of June 21, 2008, became his wife!) Don and Paul recommitted to singing more often and to further grow as a musical duo.

Don and Paul rediscovered the joy and sheer pleasure of singing and playing together, and in the summer of 2006 began playing at local Denver coffee shops and open mic nights.

In April of 2011, Nearly There! completed their first full-length CD, titled, "Songs Among Friends." It's a collection of 60s and 70s folk music, with selections from John Prine, Seals and Crofts, Don McLean, Australian songwriter/singer, John Williamson, and, of course, John Denver.

We are regularly joined by a great mandolin/violin player, Pat Chavez, and a powerful vocalist, Debby Powell, whose original songs are poignant and well-written. We hope to be featuring Debby on her songs, soon.

www.debbypowell.com

We also have local percussionist Marty Kenfield, joining us: Marty also plays a mean harmonica, hot congas and bongos, plus a plethora of other weird, wonderful, and noisy percussion instruments!

We play around the Metro area so make sure to check our blog often for updates on upcoming gigs.
